Kostov was born on May 11, 2008, in Belgrade. He joined Red Star’s youth academy at the age of just seven. Standing 176 cm tall and right-footed, he became known in the youth ranks for his excellent long-range shooting ability.

CLUB CAREER

He made his debut for Red Star Belgrade’s senior team on January 16, 2025, in a friendly match against OFK Beograd during the team’s training camp in Antalya.

That Red Star seriously counts on him was confirmed when he signed a professional contract on November 14, 2024, valid until 2027. His SuperLiga debut came on April 6, 2025, once again against OFK Beograd, when he entered the game from the bench.

His first appearance in the group stage of a European competition came in the second round of the Europa League, away against Porto, when coach Vladan Milojević named him in the starting lineup. Kostov repaid his trust in the best possible way — scoring the equalizer in the 32nd minute. Red Star eventually lost 2–1, but Kostov’s outstanding performance did not go unnoticed.

INTERNATIONAL CAREER

Vasilije is originally from Dimitrovgrad, and some sources claim he has Macedonian roots and also holds a North Macedonian passport. Because of that, the Football Federation of North Macedonia hoped he would play for their national team, but Kostov decided to represent Serbia instead.

So far, he has gone through Serbia’s youth teams — U15, U16, U17, and U19. At the 2024 UEFA Under-17 European Championship, he led Serbia to the semifinals, scoring two goals and being selected for the tournament’s Best XI. He made his debut for Serbia’s senior national team on October 11, 2025, in a 1–0 defeat to Albania in Leskovac, as part of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. He came on as a substitute in the 75th minute.
