Tennis is one of the most popular sports in Bulgaria. While the country is especially known for its successful female players, in the men’s game one name clearly stands out — Grigor Dimitrov. However, Dimitrov isn’t the only Bulgarian to have broken into the ATP Top 100. Since 2016, Sofia has hosted an ATP Tour event, and young players like Ivan Ivanov and Aleksandar Vasilev have already shown great potential and are seen as the future of Bulgarian tennis. Below is a list of the five best Bulgarian male tennis players of all time, ranked by their highest career ATP position.

5. Adrian Andreev

We begin our list with an active player, Adrian Andreev. He first drew attention in 2018 when he won the Junior US Open doubles title. His best career ranking so far is No. 183, achieved on September 18, 2023. He has yet to make his Grand Slam debut, though he came close in 2023 by reaching the third qualifying round at both the Australian Open and Roland Garros. So far, he has won one Challenger title and holds a 2–7 record on the ATP Tour.

4. Dimitar Kuzmanov

Next on our list is another active player, Dimitar Kuzmanov. Although he has reached the final round of Grand Slam qualifying three times (Roland Garros, Wimbledon, and the US Open), he has yet to appear in a Grand Slam main draw. His highest career ranking is No. 159, achieved on August 29, 2022. Kuzmanov has three Challenger titles to his name and a 21–20 record on the ATP Tour.

3. Milen Velev

The third-highest-ranked Bulgarian in history is Milen Velev, whose professional career spanned from 1991 to 2002. His career-best ranking came on September 27, 1993, when he reached No. 121 in the world. Velev played only one Grand Slam main draw match — at the 1994 Australian Open — where he lost to Mats Wilander in four sets. He captured one Challenger title and posted a 5–11 record on the ATP Tour.

2. Orlin Stanoychev

The first Bulgarian player ever to reach the world’s Top 100 was Orlin Stanoychev. His career-high ranking was No. 96, achieved on April 24, 2000. He competed in all four Grand Slam tournaments, reaching the second round of Roland Garros that same year. On other Slams, he came close several times, losing in five-set thrillers. Stanoychev claimed four Challenger titles and had a 16–50 ATP Tour record. Despite the negative win–loss ratio, he reached two ATP quarterfinals during his career.

1. Grigor Dimitrov

And finally, we arrive at the undisputed greatest Bulgarian tennis player of all time — Grigor Dimitrov. As the 2008 Wimbledon junior champion, he immediately caught the public’s eye. Due to his elegant one-handed backhand and smooth playing style, fans nicknamed him “Baby Federer.”

Although he has never won a Grand Slam title, Dimitrov has reached the semifinals at three of the four Majors — his best result at Roland Garros being a quarterfinal appearance. The biggest trophy of his career is the 2017 ATP Finals, which he won in London. Following that triumph, he reached his career-high ranking of World No. 3 on November 20, 2017.

Dimitrov has won nine ATP titles, including the 2017 Cincinnati Masters and the aforementioned ATP Finals. He represented Bulgaria at the 2012 London Olympics, where he was eliminated in the second round.
Off the court, Dimitrov has often drawn media attention for his high-profile relationships — including Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova and American singer Nicole Scherzinger. His current partner is Mexican actress Eiza González.
