Serbs who won the UEFA Champions league

Several Serbian football players have won trophy in European champions cup and UEFA Champions league. Some legendary names are on this list so we recommend to you to read full article below.

We will start with the winners of this competition under its previous name, the European Cup, and then we will see which Serbs won this competition in the new format, named the UEFA Champions league.

EUROPEAN CUP (1955-1992)

Velibor Vasovic (Ajax, 1971)

The first Serbian to win the European Champions Cup was  Velibor Vasovic , as the captain of Dutch Ajax in 1971.

Vasovic previously led Partizan in the final against Real Madrid in 1966, in which he was the only scorer for the Belgrade team. What he failed to do with the black and whites, he achieved five years later with the famous Dutch club.

Borisa Djordjevic (SV Hamburger, 1983)

The next invader came only 12 years later.  Borisa Djordjević  won the trophy with the German SV Hamburger in the 1982-83 season.

FC RED STAR BELGRADE (1991)

Next comes the famous Red Star Belgrade team that climbed to the top of Europe in 1991 in Bari, and the Serbian players in the team were:  Stevan Dika Stojanovic, Zeljko Kaludjerovic,  Sinisa Mihajlovic , Vladimir Jugovic, Vlada Stosic, Slobodan Marovic, Ivica Momcilovic , Rade Tosic, Goran Vasilijevic  and  Dragisa Binic.

UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

From the 1992-93 season, a group stage was introduced and the competition itself changed its name to the UEFA Champions League. Since then, six Serbian players have won the trophy:

Vladimir Jugovic (Juventus, 1996)

By winning the title of European champion with Juventus in 1996, Vladimir Jugovic became the first Serbian footballer to win the title twice in the elite competition.

In the final against Ajax in Rome, Jugovic came off the bench in the 44th minute and scored the decisive goal in the penalty shootout that brought the “Old Lady” the second title in this competition.

It is certain that the popular “Juga” will remain the only Serbian footballer who won the title even when the competition was called the European Champions Cup and later when it changed its name to the UEFA Champions League.

Perica Ognjenovic (Real Madrid, 2000)

Perica Ognjenovic’s stay at Real Madrid was not what the Serbian football public had hoped for when he left Red Star Belgrade. He played only 16 games in three years in Madrid and scored one goal.

Nevertheless, Ognjenovic can boast of winning the Champions League in the 1999-2000 season with “Royal club”, although he was not even on the bench in the final itself. Real Madrid then defeated Valencia 3-0 in the “All-Spanish final” in Saint-Denis and thus prevented compatriot Miroslav Djukic from entering the list of conquerors.

Nemanja Vidic (Manchester United, 2008)

Nemanja Vidic was one of the key players in Manchester United’s campaign to win the European Championship in the 2007-08 season. Along with Rio Ferdinand, Vidic formed an insurmountable defensive wall that led United to the grand final at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.

The rival in the “All-English final” was Chelsea, and it was Nemanja Vidic who was one of the key players in the final, since he received a blow from Didier Drogba, which earned the striker from the Ivory Coast a red card.

Dejan Stankovic (Inter Milan, 2010)

The arrival of the famous Jose Mourinho on the bench of Inter from Milan meant the greatest ambitions for the Italian club and under the leadership of the Portuguese, Inter in the 2009-10 season won their third European title in the final against Bayern Munich in Madrid with goals from Diego Milito.

One of the important screws of that season for Inter was the then captain of the Serbian football team, Dejan Stankovic, who replaced the Romanian footballer Christian Kivu in the final in the 68th minute. Just two minutes later, Milito scored Inter’s second goal and soon the celebrations could begin for Dejan and his teammates.

Branislav Ivanovic (Chelsea, 2012)

With the arrival of Roman Abramovich at the head of Chelsea, the London club highlighted the highest ambitions, among which winning the Champions League became the ultimate goal. However, the realization was not at all easy and after a long wait, in a rather strange season, Chelsea won the first title by winning in Munich against Bayern.

It was with Ivanovic’s goal in the round of 10 in the 105th minute that Chelsea eliminated Napoli and went to the quarter-final match against Benfica.

Although he was one of the irreplaceable players in the campaign to the final, Branislav Ivanovic had to miss the final match due to two bookings. However, the teammates made sure to beat Bayern after the penalty shootout, which gave Branislav Ivanovic the UEFA Champions League trophy!

Luka Jovic (Real Madrid, 2022)

Like his predecessor in Real Madrid jersey, Perica Ognjenovic, Luka Jovic also failed to fight for the status in the most trophy-winning European club. He scored three goals in 36 games, but also won the Champions League, which is surely one of his favorite memories from his time in Madrid.

Real Madrid defeated Liverpool in the final in Paris and thereby won the 14th title of European champion. In the final itself, Luka Jovic was not in the protocol.
