We continue our series about Serbian covers of Greek songs. After the first and second parts — which are also the most-read articles on our site — in this third part we’ll highlight ten more well-known songs by Serbian artists that are actually covers of Greek hits.
1. Zeljko Samardzic – Sve je moje tvoje
This is actually the song that inspired me to write the first article about Serbian covers of Greek songs. During an evening walk in a Greek resort on Sithonia, I heard a familiar melody coming from a café. But instead of the Serbian singer performing Željko Samardzic’s 1999 hit “Sve je moje tvoje”, it was actually “Pite tis” by the late Greek singer Vasilis Karras, released in 1996.
2. Dara Bubamara – Ne gledaj me tako
In the first two parts, we featured one song by Dara Bubamara, so we’ll stick to that trend in the third. Her 2005 hit “Ne gledaj me tako” is once again trending, though few know that it’s a cover of “San trelos se agapao” (2003) by one of Greece’s most popular singers, Nikos Vertis, who also held a successful concert in Belgrade.
Interestingly, this song also has a Bulgarian version performed by Ivana Todorova Kaludova, titled “Praznik vseki den.”
3. Fantastic Band – Taguj me
Probably the best-known song by Fantastic Band is “Taguj me.” The original version is performed by Greek singer Konstantinos Galanos and is titled “Tha parakalas.”
4. Jelena Karleusa – Ide maca oko tebe
The singer with probably the highest number of covers in her repertoire, yet mentioned here for the first time, is Jelena Karleusa. Her 2005 song “Ide maca oko tebe” is a cover of Eurovision winner Helena Paparizou’s “Katse kala” (2004).
5. Romana Panic – Ti ipak svojoj djeci
Romana Panic’s 2001 song “Ti ipak svojoj djeci” is a cover of “Giatriko” by Despina Vandi, originally released in 1999.
6. Osvajaci – Vino crveno
The biggest hit of the band Osvajaci during their folk phase was “Vino crveno” (1999). Few people know that this song is actually a cover of “Eftihos pu ksehasa na megaloso” (1997) by the Greek group Zig Zag.
7. Natasa Bekvalac – Ponovo
It’s hard to find anyone in Serbia who hasn’t heard “Ponovo” (2006) by Nataša Bekvalac. But did you know it’s a cover of “Matono” (2004) by Greek singer Peggy Zina?
We should also mention the Montenegrin version of the same song — “Pali me tvoje tijelo” — performed by Jole Radonjić, which many mistakenly believed was sung by Dženan Lončarević.
8. Marija Serifovic – Agonija
Even our Eurovision winner Marija Šerifović couldn’t resist including at least one cover in her discography. Her 2005 song “Agonija” is a cover of “Olo leipeis” (2001) by Despina Vandi.
9. Emina Jahovic & Sasa Kovacevic – Jos ti se nadam
Now we come to a very well-known duet. Emina Jahovic and Sasa Kovacevic struck gold in 2010 with “Još ti se nadam”, a song that played an important role in both their careers. The duet is a cover of the slower-tempo song “Den eho hrono” (2001) by Michalis Hatzigiannis.
10. Dzej – Ritam vozi, vozi
And of course — Dzej. To close this part, we’ll mention “Ritam vozi vozi” (2002) by Dzej Ramadanovski, which is actually a cover of “Esu tha haseis” (2001) by Katy Garbi.
We’d be lying if we said we don’t plan to release a fourth part. Until then, you can revisit:
