Serbian Basketball Players Who Played for Real Madrid

Real Madrid Crest

Traditionally one of the best basketball clubs in Europe, Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid has rarely lifted trophies without Serbian players in its roster. Over the years, Serbian stars have left a significant mark on the history of the “Royal Club.” Here is the complete list of Serbian basketball players who wore the Real Madrid jersey:

DRAZEN DALIPAGIC

A legendary forward and one of the pioneers of Serbian basketball, Dalipagić played for Real Madrid in the 1982–83 season. During his short stint in Madrid, he only appeared in EuroLeague games.

NIKOLA LONCAR

EuroLeague champion with Partizan in 1992 and a decorated national team member, Lončar played for Real in the 1995–96 season. Although trophies eluded him in Madrid, the experience proved valuable as he later became a successful basketball commentator on Spanish television.

ZORAN SAVIC

One of just three Serbian players to have played for both Real Madrid and Barcelona, Savić joined the “Royal Club” in the 1995–96 season but did not manage to win a trophy.

DEJAN BODIROGA

When Željko Obradović took charge of Real, he brought in one of the national team’s key figures at the time—Dejan Bodiroga. He played for the Spanish giants from 1996 to 1998, winning the Saporta Cup (1997) and earning ACB League MVP honors in the 1997–98 season.

ALEKSANDAR DJORDJEVIC

A direct transfer from Barcelona to Real Madrid always makes headlines, especially when it involves a star like Sasha Djordjevic. In the summer of 1999, “Sale Nacionale” joined Real and helped the club win the ACB League title in the 1999–2000 season.

DUSAN VUKCEVIC

After four seasons with Olympiacos, Vukčević moved to Real in the summer of 2001. He played 59 games that season, averaging 9.46 points per contest before transferring to Montepaschi Siena.

DRAGAN TARLAC

Following a brief spell with the Chicago Bulls, Tarlac played for Real Madrid from 2001 to 2003. Despite solid performances, his time in Madrid did not bring silverware.

IGOR RAKOCEVIC

Known as one of Europe’s deadliest shooters, Rakočević joined Real Madrid in 2005. In the 2005–06 EuroLeague season, he averaged 14.8 points per game.

MARKO JARIC

After his NBA career, Jaric suited up for the “Royal Club” in the 2009–10 season, averaging 7.1 points per game in the EuroLeague.

NOVICA VELICKOVIC

Veličković’s Real Madrid story had all the makings of a fairy tale—at least in the beginning. He arrived in 2009 as one of the EuroLeague’s rising stars and impressed in his first season, averaging nearly 8 points per game in the EuroLeague with an even greater impact on the team’s play. Unfortunately, injuries plagued him in the following years, and by 2012 he parted ways with the club. His only trophy in Madrid was the Copa del Rey in 2012.

OGNJEN KUZMIC

The only Serbian basketball player to win both the NBA and EuroLeague titles, Kuzmić tore his ACL early in the 2017–18 season but remained part of the squad that went on to win the EuroLeague. He returned to action at the start of the 2018–19 campaign, but recurring injuries soon followed, and he eventually moved back to Crvena zvezda.

MARIO NAKIC

The son of Partizan legend Ivo Nakic, Mario joined Real Madrid at just 14 years old. He made his senior debut in 2018 and stayed until 2021, when he moved to Andorra.

TRISTAN VUKCEVIC

Eighteen years after his father Dušan, Tristan Vukčević made his Real Madrid debut. Between 2019 and 2022 he won the Spanish Supercup (2021) before moving to Partizan and later being drafted by the Washington Wizards in the 2023 NBA Draft.
